Subject: Camp Fun Voodoo Man - And, Don't Give Up Your Day Job
A by-the-numbers voodoo thriller that is great fun for an hour and five minutes - if this kind of film is your idea of fun - and it certainly will not be for everyone. Bela Lugosi plays - Bela Lugosi as a mad doctor trying to revive his long dead wife Ellen Hall), who hasn't aged a wink since her death 20 years before - in his typical overacted "B" movie style - not his "A" movie style. George Zucco must have had a hoot playing the part of a face-painted, robe-clad, chanting and howling voodoo priest - who runs a gas station as his day job. John Carradine is too funny for words as one of the two simpleton servants of Lugosi - dig that crazy drumming. Michael Ames (according to IMDb, really some forgettable actor named Tod Andrews) is a "C" grade hero, but adequate for the part. The beautiful women, particularly those with speaking parts, Louise Currie and Wanda McKay, are good to look at, even if their acting is "B" film caliber, it is adequate for this film - after all, for half of their screen time, all they do is stare into space. Incredibly silly, but fun.

Forget the nay sayers, if you are a Lugosi fan, you must see this film. Watch Lugosi during the transference sequence...no other actor would have DARED to try do that many emotional changes in such a short segment...and pull it off beautifully. As for the film it self, the budget (or lack thereof) shines like a bad penny, BUT the film IS entertaining.

This film is simply indefensible--it is, what it is, but Lugosi is in good form and the story is about as zany as any other of his Monogram features, although having seen them all, in some inexplicable way, to me, this is the best of the lot. It's an all-star cast for a Monogram picture and besides, where ELSE could you see George Zucco playing a gasoline station attendant (this is a major stretch no matter how fertile the imagination, but that's the thing--it works in this film!)

Maybe the DivX version is flawed...the 512Kb_Mp4 version downloads ok, and plays back from opening titles, to end titles.
The plot thickens.

Subject: Another comedy with Bela Lugosi
Subject: Another comedy with Bela Lugosi
I´m not quite sure if this film was intended to be seen as a horror movie or thriller at the time it was made, but for me it worked mostly as a comedy.
What do you get when you watch this movie? Absent minded beautiful women, mumble jumble, drums, Bela Lugosi with hypnotic eyes AND George Zucco in funny clothes, a sheriff of whom the writers of this flic obviously couldn´t decide is he smart or dumb as an ass and who also appears one year later in "The Flying Serpent" (also available here), a wonderful John Carradine and many more things.
May be this isn´t a very good film, maybe there are continuity errors (without looking for these I at least once had the impression), but I had a lot of fun! That is what counts. ORIGINAL FROM MAY 29, 2010
Don´t forget to count the number of women under Lugosi´s spell and compare it to the number of missing girls. If you don´t develop a nervous breakdown I do not know what gets you out of your seats.

Bela Lugosi as a voodoo obsessed doctor and his dead wife who still manages to get around quite well; George Zucco as a gobbledygook chanting witchdoctor with a whacky headdress; John Carradine as a dimwitted bongo pounder - even Wanda McKay is on hand to brilliantly display her good looks and lack of acting talent. If all this wasn't enough, there's a bevy of spaced-out cuties in diaphanous gowns. What more could you want?
The other reviewers are correct. This is a comedy, but not an intentional one. There are intentional moments of unneeded comic relief supplied by a reluctant sheriff and his sleepy deputy, but this lovable turkey was supposed to be a voodoo horror story. Regardless of how you take it, "Voodoo Man" is low-budget fun from beginning to end. The print is in reasonably good shape.
P.S. But you do have to ask, what the hell were they thinking!?!

She's not dead the way you know it?
John Caradine's character is very similar to Torgo. I could go on and on here but the similarities are striking. This Lugosi starred cheapie is obviously a lot better than Manos of course!

Subject: Good For Laughs
The plot description for this film reminded me of another Lugosi film here at IA, and a quick search turned up The Corpse Vanishes, which is a much, much better movie than this turkey. I never thought I'd be comparing that movie favorably with any other.
The screenwriter, Robert Charles, whose only other writing credit is for Return of the Ape Man, which was made the same year and with much of the same cast as Voodoo Man (Jungle Goddess Wanda McKay got to escape that one), clearly deserves most of the blame. Director William Beaudine (Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter) gets credit for the day-for-night continuity errors and for not really caring. These two combined with some indifferent acting do provide some laughs, which is why I mildly enjoyed watching this groaner. John Carradine shows more passion than any other cast member in his role as a moronic flunky.
A final insult comes at the end of this clunker. The film's hero, a screenwriter, is discussing making a movie from his experiences with his boss, when he suggests Bela Lugosi be cast as the voodoo man. Ugh.
I downloaded the DivX file. The video and audio were fine.
